This Chess Box is about 13" x 13" and 3 5/8" high on the outside. Inside it is 12 1/4" x 12 1/4" x 2". I made it using 612 pieces of wood cut in triangle shapes from different kinds of wood. Each square is 1 ½” and is made by using four triangles. This makes a design within each square and gives it a completely different look. The box is finished in its natural color with 8 or 10 coats of varnish on the top. Then the sides were sanded and 5 or 6 coats of wiping varnish were rubbed in by hand. After the top had hardened for at least a month, I leveled it and buffed to a high shine. This does give the top a more amber look than the sides but gives it a “glass smooth” feel on the top. The pieces are a bit over 3/16" thick, glued onto a Baltic Birch base, so they hold up much better than a thin veneer.
The type of wood is listed on the bottom of the box from the center out. On this box the wood is “Hackberry” and “Walnut” from Missouri and “Wenge” from West Africa.
On the bottom I signed it, listed the wood, and dated it. After the date, the words “Foot Cut” let you know I made it on a foot powered table saw.
I lined the bottom of the box with black velveteen.
