A Brisk Walk North “5 Minutes from My Home” --
-- You come to this wooden bridge, 36 feet long and 14 feet down to the water from the deck, it does have a 6 inch rail along the sides. The road has a slight curve, just before you get to it coming from the north. In 1972 the school bus route had the bus coming south to pick up some kids that lived on south of us. They had a teenager driving the bus that thought he was a race car driver. You could hear the bus engine revving up as he came down the hill to the bridge and the bang of him hitting the floor of the bridge. One morning after they had graded the road, the day before, he came racing down the hill and slipped on the loose gravel enough to try and take the bridge on two wheels, (it’s best to get all 4 wheels on a bridge). He ended up in the creek upside down. It hurt some of the children pretty bad and made my wife wonder if she wanted to send our kids to school on that bus in 3 or 4 years. I believe they let the race car driver pursue his career with someone else.
