Hamburger Hamming it Up
My daughter and her husband found a large dairy up in central Nebraska that they could buy a new born Jersey bull calf. They found someone else that wanted some for their kids and their 4-H project. He went up yesterday to get them, so I made a fast trip over into Nebraska to get it home before the weather turned bad as it is today and is set to get worse. He came up with two full Jerseys, two Jersey-Holsteins cross and one full Holstein. I took the Holstein because it will make more Hamburger when he grows up. Deb and Galen wanted a Jersey bull for their 5 cows; he can breed them better and cheaper than the AI guy. The man where Galen got them said that they lay around a lot for the first week or so. They are doing that and they are all 5 days old now. I couldn’t get Hamburger to eat last night when I tried a couple times but this morning after finding him half in the barrel under the light, I used a turkey baster to get a pint into him, then he started to suck on my finger so took another pint out of the bottle. The second feeding was all from the turkey baster as he would never start sucking. I’ve never seen him up on all four hooves yet, just close. He likes to sleep too much yet.
